Pitt vs. Georgia Tech - Feb. 8, 2020 - 2PM - Live Game Thread
Pitt (14-9, 5-7) takes the court at home on Saturday afternoon against Georgia Tech (11-12, 5-7), following a tough 80-72 road loss to Notre Dame on Wednesday night. This game represents as much of a "must win" game for Pitt as they'll have this year, as a win keeps any aspirations of an NCAA Tournament berth alive.
Players to watch this afternoon:
Georgia Tech - Michael Devoe. Devoe, a former blue-chip guard prospect from the class of 2018, is Georgia Tech's top shooter. Not only does he lead the Yellow Jackets with 16.0 points per game, but he is a great pure shooter, hitting on 40.7 percent of his three point attempts on the year. Pitt has struggled at times this year at limiting the effectiveness of strong three-point shooters. Devoe gives them another test today.
Pitt - Justin Champagnie. After an inefficient offensive game on Wednesday that saw Champagnie put up 20 points on 8-for-20 shooting, we'll see how the true freshman bounces back today. Champagnie, who is averaging 11.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game so far this year, has bounced back from ineffectiveness already this year to great effect. Following a three-game stretch where he totaled just nine points against Rutgers, Louisville, and Northern Illinois, Champagnie went on a torrid four game stretch where he posted 17.0 points per game on 52.2 percent shooting and a whopping 47.6 percent from beyond the arc. Let's see how he responds today.
The Panthers have a 68.2 percent chance of winning according to ESPN, and the Panthers are favored by two points. According to KenPom's college basketball rankings, Pitt and Georgia Tech are a very close match, with Pitt sitting at no. 82 and the Yellow Jackets at no. 81.
