The Pitt football program received a verbal commitment from Malvern (Pa.) Malvern Prep quarterback Alex Hornibrook over the weekend.   He chose the Panthers over scholarship offers from Rutgers, Connecticut, Akron, Colgate, Yale, Fordham and Lafayette.

To gain better perspective on Pitt’s newest signal caller, DreamBackfield.om spoke with Malvern Prep Head Football Coach Aaron Brady.

“Alex really wowed me the second I took over the program” stated Coach Brady.  “Simply put, he’s a born leader.  He really impressed me from day one.  Even in the way he carries himself.  Prior to me taking over at Malvern Prep, Alex grouped the team together and got the team in the weight room working out and lifting. “

Hornibrook was the fifth player to commit to Pitt’s 2015 football recruiting class.  He joins Altoona linebacker Kevin Givens, Kittanning tight end Nick Bowers, Canon-McMillan offensive lineman Alex Paulina and Hallandale (FL) cornerback Malik Henderson.

“Alex has natural ability that you can’t teach.  You can already see it coming out this spring.  He has instincts that few quarterbacks have and an incredible work ethic.  He loves to learn about the game.  Alex is always studying things like coverages and routes.  He’s always looking to get better.”

Brady was asked to highlight Hornibrook’s top attributes as a quarterback.  He quickly responded, “Alex has a strong arm.  He has a stronger arm than people give him credit for.  People seem to think that lefties don’t have strong arms.  Alex breaks that stereotype.  He can make all of this throws.”

“Alex has very high football acumen.  He’s a true student of the game.  Lastly, people seem to think that Alex can’t move.  I think they see his highlight film and think he’s a Pro-Style quarterback that can’t use his legs.  That’s totally incorrect.  He’s actually a great athlete.  His highlight film is mostly comprised of him throwing the ball.  When he’s flushed from the pocket, he can scramble.”

“Pitt picked up a great football player and leader.  (Pitt head football coach) Paul Chryst has the program pointed in the right direction.  He and his staff are very impressive.  They added another piece of their puzzle with Alex.”
