LB Quintin Wirginis healthy and ready for PITT

Quentin Wirginis

Pittsburgh (PA) Fox Chappel linebacker Quintin Wirginis earned a scholarship offer from Pitt last summer.  He attended their summer prospect camp and highly impressed the coaching staff with his mix of size and athleticism.  Quintin committed to the Panthers shortly after.  With Pitt commitment in hand, he planned on becoming one of the most dominant defensive players in the WPIAL.  His plans fell short when he suffered a Lisfranc injury to his right foot.

Wirginis chose Pitt over Temple.  He’s capable of running a 4.7 forty-yard dash.  Quintin registered a team high 72 tackles (15 tackles for a loss), 3 sacks and an interception as a junior.

DreamBackfield.com recently caught up with Wirginis.  He provided our site with an update.

“My foot has healed.  It feels great.  I feel like I have fully recovered,” stated Wirginis.  “When I first started playing basketball it was really sore and I thought I made a mistake.  It felt like I had reinjured it.  Eventually the pain went away and I’m moving pretty well.”

When asked if he has regained his ‘football speed’, he stated “I think my speed is coming back.  It’s hard to judge.  I have gone from the football field to the basketball court back onto the football field.  It feels better.  I feel like my speed is almost back to normal.”

“I’m currently a solid 225 pounds.  I had gained some weight and probably weighed a little more before basketball.  Basketball dropped me back to 225 pounds.”

The Lisfranc injury robbed Quintin of his senior season.  He was generally considered an ‘under-the-radar’ recruit.  He was asked if he felt robbed of the opportunity to show Pitt fans what he was capable of on the football field.  Quintin responded, “I clearly would have liked to have played my senior year, but I know that Pitt offered me for a reason.  I never worried about rankings from any service.”

Wirginis attended a number of Pitt football and basketball games during the season.  He was able to meet the majority of his 2014 recruiting class.  He’s more than confident of the program being built by head coach Paul Chryst.

“I couldn’t feel better heading into my freshman year.  Our recruiting class is amazing.  All of them are heading to Pitt with a winning attitude.  Coach Chryst has done a great job recruiting good players on and off the field.  They’re a great group of guys.”
