Catching Up With Aaron Mathews

Over the last few years, Clairton H.S. has provided the Pitt football team with lots of talent, none better than star wide receiver Tyler Boyd. Pitt coaches are hoping that Clairton’s current star receiver also selects Pitt.

Aaron Matthews (6-4, 183) was a huge part of Clairton’s record-breaking 2014 team and will no doubt put up big stats this year. The size of Matthews makes him nearly impossible for teams to cover and something that’s very attractive to D-1 schools.

Matthews tells DreamBackfield.com that he currently holds 12 offers, latest ones coming from Syracuse and Minnesota.  Does he have a Top 3? The answer is Yes,, “Pitt, West Virginia and Maryland (no order).

Here’s why Matthews has these 3 schools In the lead:

1) Pitt: “Hometown school, new coaching staff and good relationship with coaches.

2) Maryland: “WR coach has many years of experience in the NFL.”

3) West Virginia: “Liked the atmosphere at the football games and they run a spread offense.”

You’d think that with the presence of Boyd, Pitt would be the clear leader but that’s not the case.  In fact, Matthews said, “Tyler doesn’t have anything to do with my decision. When him and I talk it’s not always about Pitt. He’s always talking to me about how I shouldn’t let anything influence me.”

Looking at Pitt’s WR depth chart and the fact that Boyd is likely headed to the NFL draft next year,  a player with Matthew’s talent would be a welcome addition.

Pitt WR Depth Chart: Tyler Boyd, Zach Challingsworth, Dontez Ford, Jester Weah, Elijah Zeise, Jaquan Davidson

Matthews told me that he’s developed a good relationship with Pitt WR coach Kevin Sherman.

It should be noted that Pat Narduzzi and Pitt have already received a verbal commitment from 4-star WR Ruben Flowers (Lima, Ohio).   Pitt is also in the mix for other wideouts such as C.J. Riley (6-5, 188) from Coconut Creek, Florida.

That being said, if a local player with the talent of Matthews wants to attend your school, Narduzzi will have a scholarship for him.

I was unable to get Matthews to give me a timeline for when he’d to make his decision.
